"Spoon River Anthology" Performance

Actors Jon & Paddy Lynn will portray characters from the poems in "Spoon River Anthology" by Edgar Lee Masters, interspersed with folk nand popular music of the period by singer, guitarist, and banjoist Patti Ecker.

The program will be held in the multipurpose room of the First Baptist Church, 601 Main St., Carthage, IL on Tuesday, September 11 at 6:00 pm.  It is free of charge and open to the public.

The program is sponsored by the Carthage Public Library in honor of the bicentennial of the State of Illinois and a kickoff to the Library's 125th Anniversary Celebration.

"Spoon River Anthology" is the best know work of Edgar Lee Masters, who grew up in Illinois, near New Salem and attended Knox College in Galesburg for a year.  The Anthology is a collection of poems, written in the form of monologues spoken by the dead in a mid-western cemetery.  His characters speak not only of their virtues but also of their vices, moral dilemmas and failures.  The community of Spoon River is fictitious, but based on the Illinois towns of Petersburg and Lewiston, the area where Masters grew up.

This program is provided by the Illinois Humanities Road Scholars Speakers Bureau.  Illinois Humanities is supported in part by the National Endowment for the Humanities and the Illinois General Assembly through the Illinois Arts Council, as well as private contributions.
